These herbs do not require much care either. The colder your climate the more your plants run the risk of not surviving the winter.

Other perennial herbs such as tarragon chives and mint are less hardy so may die back as the temperatures drop over winter.

Perennial herbs that survive winter. Winter Savoury is Janes favourite. Plant them where they get at least four to six hours of direct sunlight each day. The tiny purple flowers are quite pretty and dwarf or trailing varieties make a great addition to the garden.

They survive the extreme cold of Alberta winters and reliably emerge each Spring. They are almost indestructible. Lavender rosemary and sage are present all through the year and are some good examples of woody herbs that are like shrubs.

Perennial herbs are bay chives lavender lemon balm marjoram mint oregano rosemary sage tarragon thyme and winter savory. The Mediterranean herbs are tough and only need watering about every second or third week but the leafy greens will need watering every 4 to 6 days. Piney-scented rosemary is a fairly sturdy plant.

Its hardy in mild winters but can survive for years in cold climates if planted in a pot and brought indoors in winter. Perennial herbs such as Sage Thyme Chives Mint and Lavender can overwinter and grow back or continue to grow in spring and this for several years. In areas with frost they grow as perennials going dormant in the winter and coming back with new growth in the spring.

Annuals like Cilantro Chervil Dill Parsley and Basil will have a hard time to survive the outdoor winter and need to be replanted every year in spring time. Five herbs chives oregano French tarragon mint and thyme come back year after year in my Edmonton garden. Other herbs not listed are either annuals or biennials meaning they have a life cycle of one or two years.

Chop up and top sauces pasta dishes and roasted meats. Some cold hardy herbs mint thyme oregano sage and chives are very well adapted. Once planted Jane gives all the herbs a thorough watering to settle them into the potting mix really well.

Its creeping branches grow as a groundcover or climb structures like arches. These herbs are perennial and can survive throughout the winter keeping their leaves.
